The Abu Garcia History
By the river of Morrum in Svangsta, carl August Borgstrom in 1921 founded AB Urfabriken
The company manufactured pocketwatches, telephone timers and taximeters. Borgstrom was a brilliant craftsman with a talent for light precision engineering, skills he had acquired during his years in Halda watch-making company.Unfortunately WWII caused a sharp decline in the demand for taximeters. Undaunted, ABU redirected its skills towards the development of precision fishing reels.
The first reels, name Record, were marketed in 1939. The generation of world-famous Ambassadeur reels got their start at the 1954 New York World’s Fair. The Swedish-built ABU 444, the company’s first spinning reel, was introduced in 1955 followed in 1965 by the first Cardinal Reel. These events are still remembered as some of the most significant in the history of the sportsfishing tackle industry. AG’s influence on the sportfishing community is unmatched. The company remains firmly committed to provide fisher-men with the highest quality; most innovative products while mainitaining a position of leadership, both within the industry and as a champion of environmental concerns.
